Every day, tourists throw roughly €3,000 in coins into the Trevi Fountain.
Over a year that comes to about €1.4 to €1.6 million. In 2022 the charity Caritas Roma counted €1.4 million out of the water; 2023 was a record.
At an average of maybe thirty cents a coin, €3,000 a day is on the order of ten thousand coins, thrown by hand, over the left shoulder, every single day, in a city that receives around 21 million tourists a year.
They are collected with brush poles and a suction hose while police stand nearby, because under a city ordinance a coin becomes municipal property the moment it hits the water — which makes fishing one out theft. Arrests are routine. One man told reporters that collecting them had been his profession for years.
Since 2001 the money has gone to Caritas Roma, which uses it to run a food bank and a soup kitchen and to help families in difficulty. It amounts to roughly 15% of the charity's annual budget, and thanks to volunteer counters only about 6% is lost to the cost of sorting it.
The coins arrive in every currency on Earth — euros, dollars, pounds — and are separated and exchanged. Among them, Caritas has reported finding spectacles, religious medals, and a set of dentures.
The clock: all of which is a very Roman arrangement, because this is a city with form on telling everyone else what to count.
In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII deleted ten days from the calendar and, more importantly, fixed the leap year rule that still runs inside every device on Earth. Rome exported a system for counting time and the world took three and a half centuries to fully adopt it.
The Trevi is the reverse transaction. Ten thousand times a day, the world throws its small change back.
On 24 February 1582, Pope Gregory XIII issued a papal bull called Inter gravissimas — "among the most serious matters." The Julian calendar had been quietly overestimating the length of the year by about eleven minutes since Julius Caesar, and eleven minutes a year, compounded over sixteen centuries, had dragged the spring equinox ten days out of position. Easter was drifting.
The fix was blunt. In the countries that adopted it immediately, Thursday 4 October 1582 was followed by Friday 15 October 1582. The 5th through the 14th simply did not happen. Ten dates were removed from human history by decree.
One detail is quietly brilliant: the weekday cycle was left untouched. Thursday was still followed by Friday. Only the numbers jumped. Nobody lost a Sunday.
Then Europe spent the next three and a half centuries disagreeing.
Catholic states switched at once — the Papal States, Spain, Portugal, Poland-Lithuania. France followed in December. Protestant and Orthodox countries refused a calendar issued by a Pope. Britain held out until 1752, by which point the error had grown to eleven days, so Wednesday 2 September was followed by Thursday 14 September. Russia waited until 1918. Greece until 1923 — 341 years after Rome.
For centuries, the date changed when you crossed a border. In 1627 English forces landed on the Île de Ré on 12 July, and the French were waiting for them on 22 July. Same day. Both sides agreed it was a Thursday.
And Sweden, magnificently, tried to phase the change in gradually by skipping every leap day for forty years. It skipped 1700, then forgot in 1704 and forgot again in 1708 — leaving Sweden one day ahead of the Julian calendar and ten days behind the Gregorian, alone in the world on a calendar of its own.
The clock: you are reading this on Gregory's calendar. So is almost everyone. The reform's real achievement was not the ten days — it was the leap year rule: divisible by four, except centuries, unless divisible by four hundred. That is why 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was.
That rule is now running silently inside every phone, every server and every clock on Earth, including this one. A sixteenth-century papal fix for the date of Easter is still doing arithmetic in your pocket.
