Did You Know?
Florence Cathedral stood without a dome for over a century because no one could work out how to span the 45-metre opening without centring. Brunelleschi built it between 1420 and 1436 using a double shell and a herringbone brick pattern, and it remains the largest masonry dome ever raised.
The clock: the cathedral's interior clock, painted by Uccello in 1443, still runs — anticlockwise, on a 24-hour face, counting from sunset in the old Italian manner.
