A City Inside a Palace

Diocletian's Palace was completed around AD 305 as a retirement residence, and people never stopped living in it. Roughly 3,000 residents still occupy apartments built into its walls, making it the only Roman palace anywhere that is still an inhabited neighbourhood.

The clock: Split keeps UTC+1. Its palace clock tower has a face with 24 hours rather than 12 — a medieval Italian convention that survived the modernisation of everything around it.
