A Tower That Was Straightened Slightly

The tower began leaning during construction in 1173 because of soft ground. By 1990 it was about 5.5 degrees off vertical and closed; eleven years of soil extraction brought it back to roughly 3.97 degrees, which engineers expect to hold for a couple of centuries.

The clock: Pisa keeps UTC+1. Galileo is said to have timed a swinging cathedral lamp against his own pulse here, which led him to the pendulum — the basis of accurate clocks for the next 300 years.
