A City Rebuilt From Lava

Catania was destroyed by an Etna eruption in 1669 and an earthquake in 1693, then rebuilt in baroque using the black lava stone that had buried it — which is why the city is dark grey. Etna, still active, is Europe's tallest volcano at about 3,350 metres.

The clock: Catania keeps UTC+1. Etna's height changes with each eruption, so the figure is revised regularly.
