¿Sabías que...?

The Furthest City from the Sea Is Also Two Hours from Its Own Sun

Every day, between 21 and 30 freight trains cross from China into Kazakhstan through a single station near Ürümqi.

The station is Alashankou — Alataw Pass — one of two rail gateways on the Xinjiang border, both run by China Railway Urumqi Group. The other is Horgos. Together they handle over half of all China-Europe freight trains, and in 2025 they passed 10,000 train trips by late July.

The cumulative figures are larger still. Horgos alone has processed more than 46,000 China-Europe train trips to date, on around 90 routes linking 46 cities across 18 countries. Alashankou runs 124 routes to 21 countries. In 2024 the two ports moved 27.5 million tonnes of goods between them.

The cargo is ordinary: car parts, electronics, construction materials, steel, machinery, household goods — over 200 categories. A train leaving Horgos for Duisburg is carrying the same things a lorry would.

What is not ordinary is the timekeeping. Alashankou's daily container transshipment capacity is 2,000 TEU. Customs reforms have cut outbound clearance to as little as 20 minutes. At Horgos, import processing went from two or three days to under 16 hours — a 70% reduction — and local export clearance from six hours to one.

The clock: which is a strange level of precision for a place that cannot agree what hour it is.

Ürümqi sits at roughly 88° east. China runs a single official time zone, Beijing Time, built for the 120th meridian. That leaves the city about two hours ahead of its own solar noon, and across the region the official midwinter sunrise can fall around ten in the morning.

So a second, unofficial clock is in daily use — Ürümqi Time, two hours behind Beijing, matching the local sky. It has no legal standing. The international time zone database carries an entry for it anyway.

Trains cleared in twenty minutes, in a city where you have to ask which clock a meeting time refers to.

Ürümqi holds a Guinness World Record: the most remote city from any sea on Earth. It sits roughly 2,500 kilometres from the nearest coastline — further inland than anywhere else a large city has been built.

It is the closest major city to the Eurasian pole of inaccessibility, the point on land furthest from any ocean, which lies about 320 km north of the city in the Gurbantünggüt Desert, roughly 2,645 km from the sea. The precise spot was reached on 27 June 1986 by Nicholas Crane and Richard Crane.

For scale, the Eurasian pole is the most landlocked of all the continental poles. Africa's equivalent is around 1,800 km from the coast. Eurasia's beats it by seven hundred kilometres.

There is a caveat, and it is a good one. The classic location depends on an older definition of what counts as ocean. If the Gulf of Ob — an inlet of the Arctic Ocean in northern Russia — is included, the calculation shifts, and researchers publishing in the Scottish Geographical Journal proposed two alternative points. So there are now three competing candidates, all in northern Xinjiang.

Like Perth, Ürümqi's world record turns out to depend on a technicality about how you draw a line.

The clock: and it is remote in a second way that has nothing to do with coastlines.

China runs one official time zone, Beijing Time, UTC+8, from the Pacific coast to the Central Asian border. Ürümqi is at roughly 88° east. The zone is built for 120° east.

That leaves the city about two hours ahead of its own solar noon. In midwinter across the region, the official sunrise can arrive around ten in the morning.

In daily practice a second, unofficial clock is widely used — Ürümqi Time, two hours behind Beijing at UTC+6, which matches the local sky. It has no legal standing, but it is what a great deal of life actually runs on, and the international time zone database carries an entry for it: `Asia/Urumqi`.

Which produces the ordinary, constant friction of the place. Long-term residents describe a standard courtesy — texting half an hour before an appointment to confirm, politely, which of the two clocks you both mean.

The city furthest from any ocean is also one of the furthest from its own hour.
