The World's Coffee Champion Under the White Nights
1. Finns drink more coffee than any other nation on Earth.
At 12.0 kilograms per person every year, Finland leads global coffee consumption by a wide margin. In Helsinki, coffee is so deeply ingrained into daily life that paid coffee breaks (kahvitauko) for workers are written into Finnish collective labour agreements.
2. The land of extreme daylight swings.
At 60° north, Helsinki sits on the Gulf of Finland. On the summer solstice in June, the sun rises before 4:00 AM and sets after 10:45 PM, leaving the sky in a perpetual golden twilight called the 'White Nights'. In December, the sun barely clears the horizon for less than six hours a day.
3. The clock: Helsinki observes UTC+2 (EET) in winter and shifts to UTC+3 (EEST) in summer, perfectly synchronising with Eastern European neighbours.
