Every Sunday, Bogotá Gives the Roads Back

On 15 December 1974, an architect named Jaime Ortiz Mariño talked City Hall into closing eighty blocks of Bogotá's main avenues to cars for a few hours. Five thousand people turned up with bicycles. They called it the Great Pedal Demonstration. It was, in essence, a protest against a city that had been designed for cars in a country where most people didn't own one.

It never stopped.

Fifty years later, the Ciclovía covers roughly 128 kilometres of car-free streets, every Sunday and public holiday, from 7am to 2pm. Around 1.5 million people turn out — walking, cycling, skating, jogging, pushing prams. That is close to one in five residents of the entire city, in the street, at the same time, every week. Bogotá calls it the largest linear park in the world and it is difficult to argue.

A crew builds it every Sunday morning with cones and signs, and unbuilds it by two in the afternoon. Over 400 cities worldwide have copied the idea.

The joke, which locals make themselves: fifty years of cycling on Sunday, and on Monday everyone is stuck in traffic again.

The clock: here is what makes Bogotá quietly remarkable. It sits at 4.6° north — close enough to the equator that the sun has given up on seasons entirely. The longest day of the year is around 12 hours 10 minutes. The shortest is around 12 hours 6 minutes. A four-minute difference. Across twelve months.

And Bogotá sits almost exactly on the meridian its time zone was built around, which means the clock on the wall is within about four minutes of the actual sun. Constant days, honest clock, no daylight saving, nothing to save.

Bogotá may have the least dramatic sky on this entire list — and the most truthful clock on Earth.
