¿Sabías que...?

14,500 Tonnes of Copper a Day, and a Clock 103 Minutes Fast

1. Chile produced 5.3 million tonnes of copper last year — about a quarter of the world's supply.

Global copper production reached roughly 23 million tonnes in 2025 according to USGS data. Chile accounted for 5.3 million of it: 23 to 24%.

Divide that by the days and it comes to roughly 14,500 tonnes of copper leaving Chilean ground every day.

2. One mine accounts for a quarter of the national total.

Escondida, in the Atacama Desert at 3,100 metres, is the largest copper mine in the world. It produced 1,277,500 tonnes in 2024 — about 3,500 tonnes a day from a single pit. The name means hidden in Spanish: the ore lay under hundreds of metres of rock and was found by drilling along a line of known deposits.

Chile hosts seven of the world's top twenty copper mines.

3. The grade is falling, so the digging gets harder every year.

Escondida's ore grade was 1.72% in 2007. The remaining reserve grade is 0.52%. To recover the same amount of copper, roughly three times as much rock now has to be moved.

Mining accounts for about 12% of Chile's GDP and 57% of its export revenues — copper alone is close to half of everything the country sells abroad. Chile is also the world's second-largest lithium producer and holds roughly three-quarters of global lithium reserves.

4. And the clock is the furthest ahead of its own sun anywhere on this site.

Santiago sits at about 70.6° west.

In winter Chile uses UTC−4, built for the 60th meridian — leaving the city about 43 minutes ahead of solar noon, which is unremarkable.

In summer Chile moves to UTC−3, built for the 45th meridian. Santiago is then more than 25 degrees west of its own zone reference, which puts the city roughly 103 minutes ahead of its own sun.

That is more than Reykjavík's ninety, more than Madrid's seventy-five, more than İzmir's seventy-one. For about half the year, Santiago has the widest gap between clock and sun of any city in this project.

So: a country that ships 14,500 tonnes of metal a day out of a desert, from mines whose ore is thinning, on a clock that spends half the year nearly two hours ahead of the sky.
