Did You Know?
After a catastrophic flood in 1957, Valencia diverted the Turia river around the city and turned the empty bed into a nine-kilometre park running through the centre. The plan in the 1970s had been to make it a motorway; residents campaigned it into a garden instead.
The clock: Valencia keeps Central European Time despite sitting west of the Greenwich meridian's natural band, which is why its March Fallas festival fireworks are timed for a 14:00 mascletà — a daytime show, because the noise matters more than the light.
