A Casbah on a Slope

The Casbah of Algiers climbs about 120 metres from the harbour on a hillside so steep that its lanes are largely stairs. It is a UNESCO site and, at its densest, held tens of thousands of people in less than a square kilometre.

The clock: Algeria keeps UTC+1 with no seasonal change, despite lying almost entirely east of the Greenwich meridian's natural band — which puts Algiers' solar noon near 12:50.
