The Mezquita's hypostyle hall holds around 850 columns of jasper, onyx, marble and granite, built from the 8th century. A Renaissance cathedral was inserted into the middle of it in the 16th century; Charles V, who approved it, reportedly regretted it on seeing the result.
The clock: Córdoba keeps UTC+1 and was, in the 10th century, plausibly the largest city in the world, with a library said to hold 400,000 volumes.
