A Caldera From a Bronze Age Eruption

The Minoan eruption around 1600 BC was one of the largest in recorded history, ejecting perhaps 60 cubic kilometres of material and leaving the caldera the island now sits around. Akrotiri, buried by it, was preserved almost intact.

The clock: Santorini keeps UTC+2. Its sunsets from Oia are crowded enough that the town manages the viewing points.
