A City That Was Mostly Jewish

Thessaloniki was known as the Mother of Israel; by 1900 roughly half its population was Sephardic Jewish, descended from families expelled from Spain in 1492. Around 96% of the community was deported and killed in 1943.

The clock: Thessaloniki keeps UTC+2. Its White Tower, built by the Ottomans in the 15th century, was a prison whose whitewashing in 1890 gave it the name.
