A Bridge Built From a Teenager's Sketch

Isambard Kingdom Brunel won the Clifton Suspension Bridge competition at 24 years old, and the bridge — a 214-metre span, 75 metres above the Avon Gorge — was finished in 1864, five years after his death, as a memorial to him.

The clock: Bristol kept its own local time, about ten minutes behind London, until the railways standardised it in the 1840s. The Corn Exchange clock still has two minute hands to show both.
