The Cloth Market That Built a City

Leeds grew rich on wool, and by the early 19th century its cloth halls were handling a large share of England's woollen trade. The city's population rose roughly tenfold across the 1800s, from around 30,000 to over 400,000.

The clock: Leeds keeps GMT and BST. It sits almost exactly midway between London and Edinburgh, which is how it ended up as a rail junction and later a banking centre.
