Did You Know?

A City Built of Granite

Aberdeen is built almost entirely from local granite, quarried at Rubislaw — a pit about 140 metres deep, once among the largest man-made holes in Europe. The stone contains mica, which makes the city glitter in sunshine.

The clock: Aberdeen keeps GMT and BST at 57° north, and has been the centre of North Sea oil operations since the 1970s — an industry that runs on helicopter schedules rather than office hours.
