A City That Speaks Irish

County Galway holds the largest Gaeltacht in Ireland, where Irish is still the everyday community language for tens of thousands of people. The city itself was a Norman merchant town whose fourteen ruling families were called the Tribes.

The clock: Galway keeps Irish time. Dublin Mean Time ran 25 minutes behind Greenwich until 1916, when it was abolished — by a British parliament, in the same year as the Rising, which was noticed at the time.
