A City Rebuilt Twice

The 1963 earthquake destroyed roughly 80% of Skopje in about twenty seconds. It was rebuilt on a modernist plan by Kenzō Tange, then rebuilt again from 2010 in a neoclassical style that added several hundred statues and sharply divided opinion.

The clock: the old railway station's clock stopped at 05:17, the moment of the earthquake, and has been left that way. The building is now the city museum.
