A Fortune Built on Bird Droppings

Iquique grew rich on saltpetre and guano in the 19th century, exported as fertiliser and explosive. The invention of synthetic nitrogen in 1909 destroyed the industry, and the nitrate towns inland are now ghost towns on the UNESCO list.

The clock: Iquique keeps Chilean time. A 500-metre dune rises directly behind the city, used for paragliding year-round.
