The Heart of Mapuche Country

The Mapuche resisted both the Inca and the Spanish, and were not brought under Chilean state control until the 1880s — one of the longest indigenous resistances in the Americas. Temuco is the centre of Mapuche population today.

The clock: Temuco keeps Chilean time. Pablo Neruda spent his childhood here and wrote about its rain at length.
