A Mountain That Financed an Empire

Cerro Rico produced an enormous share of the silver that flowed into Spain from the 1540s, and Potosí grew to perhaps 160,000 people — briefly one of the largest cities in the world. The Spanish phrase vale un Potosí, worth a fortune, comes from it.

The clock: Potosí keeps UTC−4 at about 4,090 metres, which makes it one of the highest cities of any size on Earth. The mountain is still mined, by cooperatives, in conditions little changed in centuries.
