Built in 1863 to save the House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy, the Casino de Monte-Carlo became the epitome of belle époque glamour. By Monegasque law, however, Monaco citizens (Monégasques) are legally forbidden from entering the gaming rooms or gambling.
