A Staircase Built to Fool the Eye

The Potemkin Stairs are 192 steps over about 27 metres, and were built wider at the bottom than the top so that from above you see only landings and from below only steps. Eisenstein filmed the scene that made them famous in 1925.

The clock: Odesa keeps UTC+2. Beneath it run catacombs estimated at around 2,500 kilometres — old limestone quarries, and the largest such network in the world.
