A Garden City and Its Gate
The Wagah border ceremony outside Lahore has been performed every evening since 1959, an elaborately choreographed lowering of two flags by soldiers on either side of the India–Pakistan line, watched by thousands of spectators in purpose-built stands.
It is a piece of theatre performed daily by two countries that otherwise agree on very little, and it has not missed many evenings in more than sixty-five years.
The clock: Pakistan keeps UTC+5, exactly half an hour behind India across that same border — a half-hour step, one of the few land borders where the clocks differ by a fraction of an hour.
