A Metro Built as a Bomb Shelter

Tashkent's metro opened in 1977, the first in Central Asia, built deep and heavily reinforced to double as a shelter. Photographing the stations was banned until 2018, which is why their chandeliers and mosaics were largely unknown outside the city.

The clock: Tashkent keeps UTC+5. The 1966 earthquake destroyed much of the old city, and the Soviet rebuild is what most of the centre still looks like.
