A City With Walls Longer Than the Great Wall

The Benin walls and moats, built between about 800 and 1400, were estimated by some archaeologists to total around 16,000 kilometres of earthworks across the kingdom — possibly the largest earthwork built before the machine age. The British destroyed the city in 1897 and looted the Benin Bronzes.

The clock: Benin City keeps UTC+1. Museums in Europe and North America have been returning the bronzes since 2021.
