1. The birthplace of the modern boardwalk and Monopoly.

In 1870, Atlantic City opened the world's very first wooden boardwalk to keep ocean sand out of beachfront hotels. The Monopoly board popularised by Charles Darrow uses the area's real street names — Boardwalk, Park Place and (misspelled) Marven Gardens, just outside the city.
