One of the Oldest Charters in America

Albany was chartered in 1686 and claims one of the oldest continuous municipal charters in the United States, on a site Dutch traders settled from 1614. The Erie Canal, opened here in 1825, cut freight costs to the Great Lakes by around 95%.

The clock: Albany keeps Eastern Time. Its Empire State Plaza, built between 1965 and 1976, cost more than the entire Apollo programme's launch facilities.
