Japan's Second City, by Accident

Yokohama was a fishing village of around 600 people when it was chosen in 1859 as one of the first ports opened to foreign trade — precisely because it was far enough from Edo to be controllable. It is now Japan's second-largest city by population.

The clock: Yokohama keeps UTC+9. Japan's first railway ran from here to Tokyo in 1872, and with it came the country's first public timetable.
