Two Million Tonnes of Snow

Sapporo receives around five metres of snowfall a year, more than any other city of over a million people on Earth. The city budgets heavily for removal, trucking millions of cubic metres out each winter, and turns some of it into the February Snow Festival.

The clock: Sapporo keeps UTC+9 with the rest of Japan, but sits far enough north and east that its midsummer sun is up before 04:00 — one of the reasons Hokkaidō has campaigned for its own time zone.
