A Massacre Erased From the Record

The 1921 Tulsa race massacre destroyed the Greenwood district, known as Black Wall Street, killing an estimated 100 to 300 people. It was left out of Oklahoma school curricula for decades; mass grave searches began only in 2020.

The clock: Tulsa keeps Central Time. Its art deco downtown was built on 1920s oil money, and is among the best-preserved in the United States.
