A War Over a Strip of Swamp

The Toledo War of 1835–36 was a bloodless border dispute between Ohio and Michigan over a strip of land including the city. Ohio kept Toledo; Michigan was compensated with the Upper Peninsula, which turned out to hold enormous mineral wealth.

The clock: Toledo keeps Eastern Time. It has been a centre of glass manufacturing since the 1880s, which is why its art museum's glass collection is world-class.
