Roses Distilled by the Tonne

Taif's damask roses are harvested for about forty days each spring, and it takes on the order of 10,000 to 12,000 flowers to produce a single tola of attar. The city sits at around 1,900 metres, which is why roses grow here at all.

The clock: Taif keeps UTC+3 and served as Saudi Arabia's unofficial summer capital, cool enough that the government historically moved here in July.
