A City of Squares

James Oglethorpe laid Savannah out in 1733 around a repeating grid of wards each with a public square. Twenty-two of the original twenty-four survive, which makes it one of the best-preserved colonial plans in the world.

The clock: Savannah keeps Eastern Time. Its St Patrick's Day parade is among the largest in the United States, in a city of under 150,000.
