Where the Civil War Started

The first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbour on 12 April 1861. The city also endured a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 1886, unusual for the east coast, which damaged most of its buildings.

The clock: Charleston keeps Eastern Time. Its earthquake bolts — iron rods run through damaged houses to hold them together — are still visible on facades across the old city.
