A Lake That Turns Pink

Lake Nakuru once held over a million lesser flamingos feeding on its algae, one of the great wildlife spectacles anywhere. Rising water levels since 2010 have diluted the algae and pushed most of the birds to other Rift Valley lakes.

The clock: Nakuru keeps UTC+3 at about 1,850 metres in the Rift Valley, which is splitting Africa apart at roughly 6 mm a year.
