A Festival of Four Million Candles

The Fête des Lumières each December draws on the order of two million visitors over four nights, filling Lyon with light installations. It began in 1852, when residents spontaneously put candles in their windows for a statue's unveiling after the ceremony was rained off.

The clock: Lyon runs on UTC+1. It was also the birthplace of cinema — the Lumière brothers filmed workers leaving their factory here in 1895, which is the oldest surviving record of a French clocking-off time.
