A Clock That Has Run Since 1530

The Zytglogge's astronomical clock has been keeping time in Bern since 1530, and its mechanism still drives a parade of figures four minutes before each hour. Einstein lived a few doors down Kramgasse while working at the patent office and developing special relativity.

The clock: Bern is Switzerland's capital, but the country's official time signal comes from atomic clocks at METAS just outside the city — a rather more modern arrangement than the one down the street.
