The Largest Accidental Explosion Before the Atom

On 6 December 1917 a munitions ship detonated in Halifax harbour with a force estimated at roughly 2.9 kilotonnes of TNT — the largest artificial explosion in history until 1945. It killed about 1,800 people and flattened a large part of the city.

The clock: Halifax keeps Atlantic Time at UTC−4, one of only a handful of places in North America on that offset, an hour ahead of New York.
