A Cathedral That Took 632 Years

Work on Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and stopped in 1473 with the building half-finished; a crane sat on the unfinished south tower for nearly four centuries. It was completed in 1880 to the original medieval plans, which had survived.

The clock: Cologne runs on UTC+1. Its carnival season officially opens at 11:11 on 11 November — a time chosen for the number rather than for anything astronomical.
