Six Hundred Balloons at Once

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta launches around 550 to 600 balloons over nine days each October, the largest such gathering in the world. The Albuquerque Box — a wind pattern that lets pilots return to their launch point by changing altitude — is why it happens here.

The clock: Albuquerque keeps Mountain Time at about 1,600 metres, and its clear high-desert air is the other half of the reason the balloons come.
