Did You Know?
Australia is the sixth-largest country on Earth and officially has three time zones:
Look at the middle one. The central zone is half an hour offset from its neighbours, not a full hour — an unusual arrangement anywhere in the world, and it means a flight from Perth to Adelaide crosses a ninety-minute boundary.
Then daylight saving arrives, and because it is a state matter rather than a federal one, the map fractures.
From the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April:
Three time zones become five, including two separate half-hour offsets, inside a single country, for half the year.
The practical effect on Melbourne is that Victoria spends six months of the year an hour ahead of Brisbane despite sitting almost directly south of it, and three hours ahead of Perth instead of the usual two.
It took until 2007 for the states that do observe daylight saving to even agree on the same start and end dates. Before that, the dates varied too.
The clock: and then there is Broken Hill.
Broken Hill is a mining town in far western New South Wales. It is in New South Wales. It votes in New South Wales elections. And it keeps South Australian time — half an hour behind the rest of its own state — because its economic and transport links run west to Adelaide rather than east to Sydney.
It has its own entry in the international time zone database. A town of a few thousand people, inside a state of eight million, with its own officially recognised clock.
Australia did not design any of this. It simply let every jurisdiction answer the question separately, and this is the shape the answers made.
