Forty Percent of a Country's Software
Bangalore produces a large share of India's software exports — by most estimates around a third to 40% — from a city that was known until the 1980s mainly for its gardens and its mild climate.
The climate is part of the reason. At roughly 920 metres elevation, it was comfortable enough year-round that early computing firms could run machine rooms without fighting the heat.
The clock: all of India keeps a single offset, UTC+5:30, spanning about 2,900 km east to west. IST is based on 82.5° east; Bangalore, at 77.6°, runs about twenty minutes ahead of its own sun — a moderate gap by Indian standards, where the far east and far west are about an hour out.
