Did You Know?
Honiara became the Solomon Islands' capital in 1952 because the Second World War had left an airfield and infrastructure at Guadalcanal. The six-month campaign fought here in 1942–43 was one of the war's turning points.
The clock: Honiara keeps UTC+11. Iron Bottom Sound offshore holds dozens of sunken warships from that campaign.
