A City That Was Once Salisbury

Harare was founded as Fort Salisbury in 1890 and renamed in 1982, two years after independence. Great Zimbabwe, the stone city that gives the country its name, lies about 300 km south and was built between the 11th and 15th centuries.

The clock: Harare keeps UTC+2 at about 1,490 metres — high enough that its climate is subtropical highland rather than tropical.
