Over 10,000 temples were built on the Bagan plain between the 11th and 13th centuries; around 2,200 survive across about 100 square kilometres. A 1975 earthquake damaged many, and the site was finally listed by UNESCO in 2019.
The clock: Bagan keeps UTC+6:30. Balloon flights over the plain launch about an hour before sunrise, which makes them one of the few schedules here set by the sun.
