Did You Know?
Antigua was the capital of Spanish Central America until the 1773 earthquake, after which the administration moved to what is now Guatemala City and left the ruins standing. That abandonment is why the baroque city survives.
The clock: Antigua keeps UTC−6. Its Semana Santa processions lay carpets of dyed sawdust across the streets, which the procession then walks over and destroys.
