The Cities the Sun Beats to Noon

Almost every city on this site runs ahead of its own sun. Reykjavík by ninety minutes, Madrid by seventy-five, Dakar by seventy.

The reason is structural. When a country picks a time zone it usually rounds to whichever whole hour is administratively convenient, and convenience nearly always means aligning with a larger neighbour to the east. So the clock ends up ahead of the sky.

A small number of cities sit on the other side of the line — at the eastern edge of their zone, where the sun reaches midday before the clock says noon.

CityBehind its own sun
Warsaw~24 minutes
Tokyo~19 minutes
Boston~16 minutes
Rio de Janeiro~7 minutes
Kabul~7 minutes
Montreal~6 minutes

WARSAW sits at 21° east. Central European Time is calculated for the 15th meridian. Poland is at the eastern edge of a zone built for a country six degrees to its west, which is why Warsaw's sun is up and over before the clock catches it.

TOKYO is at nearly 140° east; Japan Standard Time is built for the 135th. Japan runs a single zone across an archipelago and set it toward the western end.

BOSTON is at 71° west, nearly four degrees east of the 75th meridian that Eastern Time uses. Every day of the year, the sun is over Boston at midday before the clock agrees.

KABUL is the interesting case, because it is barely behind at all — seven minutes. Afghanistan chose a half-hour zone, UTC+4:30, aimed at a meridian running through the middle of the country. The result is one of the most accurate clocks anywhere, and it happens to land just on the other side of exact.

MONTREAL at six minutes, and RIO DE JANEIRO at seven, are similarly close.

And the city at zero.

DENVER sits on the 105th meridian west — the longitudinal reference line for the entire Mountain Time Zone — which passes directly through Denver Union Station.

The city is on the line. Its clock and its sun reach midday at effectively the same instant, which makes it the most accurately timed place among the hundred cities on this site.

Denver is the point where the two collections meet: nothing ahead, nothing behind.
