Buenos Aires Is on the Couch

According to World Health Organization figures, Argentina has around 222 psychologists per 100,000 people. The United States has 30.

Read that again. Argentina has more than seven times the therapist density of the country that invented the sitcom about going to therapy. It is, by a wide margin, the most analysed nation on the planet — the next closest, Finland and Norway, are not close.

Almost half of them are in Buenos Aires. The city has a micro-neighbourhood inside Palermo that everyone calls Villa Freud, and this is not a nickname invented by amused foreigners. It is what the residents call it. There have been Freud-themed cafés. In 2020 someone formally proposed renaming one of its streets after him.

The whole thing started in the 1940s with a Spanish immigrant, Ángel Garma, who had trained with people who had trained with Freud, and who arrived in Argentina to investigate his father's death. He brought psychoanalysis in his luggage and it never left.

Reporting from the city consistently turns up the same detail: during economic crises, people cut other things before they cut therapy.

The clock: Buenos Aires sits at 58° west. Geographically that places it firmly in UTC−4. Argentina runs on UTC−3.

The country is roughly fifty-four minutes ahead of its own sun, and has been for decades. The consequence spreads through an entire culture. Evening light hangs on absurdly late. Dinner reservations start at ten. Restaurants fill at eleven. Children are visibly awake in the street at midnight and nobody remarks on it — because as far as the sky is concerned, it isn't actually that late.

Buenos Aires is not a late city by temperament. It is a late city by arithmetic. Someone moved the clock, and an entire society politely rearranged itself around the decision.
